Chapter Twelve

On May 25th, the first lilac bush erupted in glorious lavenders, exuding that wonderful and nostalgic scent for all Mackinac Island passers-by. Cindy watched its blooming with rapt attention, knowing that this first bush meant that all others would follow suit. It was the first sign of the approaching summer, the first sign that all, very soon, would be well.

CINDY: Ron! The big lilac bush on Main Street bloomed!

CINDY: I think I might start crying. It’s so beautiful.

Immediately after Cindy texted Ron, she blinked at the messages on her phone with sudden, rapt attention. Had she just taken out her phone and spontaneously texted Ron Waters? She hardly remembered having the urge to do that, let alone actually typing the words. What was she thinking?

She considered calling Megan and demanding if there was a way to “delete” messages before they were read by the receiver. Before she could make up her mind, however, Ron texted her back.

RON: I’ve been eyeing it on my walks. It’s a sign, isn’t it?

Cindy’s eyes widened at the word “sign.” Wasn’t this exactly what she’d thought? She pressed her phone against her chest and lifted her chin toward the gorgeous lilac bush. The smell of the flowers seemed like a wall, eliminating any other sensations. She could have lived in this daydream forever.

Fortunately, she had work to do, and it all centered around the Lilac Festival. Based on her and Ron’s recent meeting, she’d decided to take the social media matters into her own hands with a selection of photographs of the lilacs across Mackinac Island. Ron had seemed initially fearful of putting such responsibility on her shoulders, but she’d told him it would be okay. “I can handle it,” she’d told him, without mentioning her photography background.

Because she was so accustomed to the old Canon, she had that strung over her neck as she wandered through town, snapping photographs of the newly bloomed lilacs. Megan had told her that they could develop the photographs and then scan them into a computer to be uploaded to social media. “I didn’t know you liked taking pictures, Mom,” Megan had said during this conversation. “That camera is really retro and cool.”

Now, Megan knew one facet of Cindy’s personality— her love of photography. Megan didn’t yet know that Cindy was no longer living at the house on Pontiac Trail Head. Apparently, Megan had made a point not to talk to her father after the fight with Michael. This allowed Cindy to avoid the topic altogether for now.

Probably, it would all crash down on her head soon.

It didn’t take Cindy long to get back into the swing of taking photographs. The light in late May was glorious, catching the healthy sheen of the horses as they clopped through town and the bright purple of the lilacs as they rose to the eggshell blue sky above. As she went, she also took photographs of tourists and locals, catching the “new energy” of Mackinac Island, which wasn’t so different from the old.
